Witchblade #1

$3.99

What Previews said:

IMAGE COMICS

(W) Caitlin Kittredge (A/CA) Roberta Ingranata

"LIFE AFTER," Part One Gunned down and left for dead on a New York rooftop, Alex Underwood's life should have ended there-but instead, at the moment of death, she became host to the Witchblade, a mystical artifact that grants the woman wielding it extraordinary powers. But the power comes with a heavy cost, and Alex finds herself thrust into the center of an unseen battle raging on the snowy streets of NYC. Demons are real and walking among humans, and every one of them is intent on taking out the Witchblade's newest host before she becomes too strong to kill. But the artifact chose Alex for a reason, and she's not going down without a fight.

What Red Shirt Comics said:

Talk about a MASSIVE overhaul... It's only issue one so clearly it's just getting started and there's still plenty of time to bring back the look of Witchblade past, but judging by the story, this book is very focused on showing strong women, not exploiting them. Previous looks for Witchblade were scandalous, while nothing like that is in this issue or in any solicited cover art for 2 or 3. Perhaps this means a more refined, more character driven interpretation going forward? I hope so because issue 1 does a GREAT job of building tension and getting you to like these characters.

Dynamite Entertainment

Barbarella #1

$3.99

What Previews said:

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

(W) Mike Carey (A) Kenan Yarar (CA) Kenneth Rocafort

Earth's star-crossed daughter is back! When Barbarella wanders into a war zone, the theocratic rulers of Parosia arrest and imprison her. A prison break is brewing, but now that she knows what the Parosians do to their own citizens Barbarella decides to make this fight her own...

What Red Shirt Comics said:

As expected this book is NOT for kids. Fans of the original comics or the 1968 Jane Fonda film will not be disappointed with the wild, colorful, vibrant universe laid out in Barbarella. The visuals are beautiful, but Kenan definitely struggles with faces at times. The line work is much rougher and a bit less refined than the original Jean-Claude Forest comics, but the alien landscapes and architechtures feel believable and lived in. As for the story, in the same way that the comics and film skate the line between exploitation and empowerment so does this issue. It is liberated. Both from patriarchy as well as from being afraid to express sexuality.
