Captain's Picks 5.24.2017

Marvel Pick of the Week:

Infamous Iron Man #8

$3.99

What Previews said:

The Maker unleashes his grand design, a plan as demented and over-arching as anything Doctor Doom has ever attempted! • And now, Doom is all that stands in his way! But Doom always loses to Reed Richards, right? So what are the chances that he can pull off a victory this time? Rated T+

What Red Shirt Comics says:

It's Doctor Doom vs Reed Richards in a whole new way. Doctor Doom in his new role as hero searches for answers while "Reed" plots against him. Is this the Maker, the deranged Reed Richards of the Ultimates universe? (We'll have to wait and see next issue.) I've always been a fan of complex villains who have shades of white in them, the ability to do good. Dr. Doom has always been one of those villains. His attempts to take over the world are misguided attempts to bring order and peace. From Doom 2099 to his interactions with Valeria to his raging mother issues, he has a fierce love for his family and that alone can be enough to push him to work against his nature and do the right thing. I dig his Iron Man look and I think Bendis has a good handle on his voice. It's a fun mash up to throw him against the Maker, but boy does it remind me how much I miss the original Fantastic Four. I think Doom does, too.

DC Pick of the Week:

Ms Marvel #15

Action Comics #980

$2.99

What Previews said:

(W) Dan Jurgens (A) Patrick Zircher (CA) Clay Mann

"REVENGE" part two! Both Superman and the Revenge Squad must traverse the deadly Black Vault in a race against time to reach General Zod! Amanda Waller's secret Kryptonian weapon reveals himself to the world, but Cyborg Superman and Eradicator move in to recruit him. Tying directly into the events of this month's Suicide Squad issues-and no matter who wins in this epic showdown, it spells certain doom for the Last Son of Krypton! RATED T

What Red Shirt Comics says:

I can't say enough how much I'm enjoying Jurgens run on this book. The stories are fun and exciting while still maintaining a real sense of high stakes. It could be nostalgia why I love it so much the way Jurgens keeps bringing back older characters from days of yore, first Mr. Mxyzptlk and now Zod, Eradicator and Cyborg Superman, but I think it's just a deep understanding of the characters and a great sense of storytelling. Art continues to be real great on this as "Patch" Zircher delivers again. There's a reason this book has been a pick twice in the past few months! Superman is BACK!

Other Pick of the Week:

East of West #33

$3.99

What Previews said:

"THE KINGDOM ENDURES"-The King of New Orleans picks a side.

What Red Shirt Comics says:

Oh? What's that? You haven't been reading East of West? This is what TRADES are for! Come get caught up and then pick up this bad boy too! East of West is a bit more long form focused so it's hard to jump onto this title. This is an issue where you can probably get on board, but you won't regret starting from the beginning.

Other Pick of the Week:

XO Manowar #3

$3.99

What Previews said:

(W) Matt Kindt (A) Tomas Giorello, David Mack (CA) Lewis LaRosa

Their world became his war! Across every frontline, and through every trench, Aric of Dacia continues his hostile journey through a brutal alien planet the only way he knows how: with war. But the man once known as X-O Manowar is not alone. With a dedicated band of soldiers sworn to his side, Aric will prove his worth on the battlefield... and find himself in a position that no one saw coming! New York Times best-selling writer Matt Kindt and Valiant exclusive rising star Tomas Giorello bring the punishing first act to Valiant's biggest series of the year to its final stand-off... and will leave readers everywhere reeling with a last page surprise!

What Red Shirt Comics says:

Matt Kindt continues to be a master storyteller across so many genres and motifs. I am continually impressed by him and by Valiant as well who have really managed to make their characters dynamic and exciting again in this most recent relaunch of their line. This book closes out the first arc soundly and I've still got issue 1 & 2 in stock so it's not too late to get caught up. The interior art is really visceral and fitting to the story.
