DARKNESS COMES TO THE DC UNIVERSE WITH THE MYSTERY OF THE FORGE! Aquaman, The Flash and more of DC's pantheon of heroes suspect Batman of hiding a dark secret that could threaten the very existence of the multiverse! It's an epic that will span generations-but how does it connect to the origins of one of DC's most legendary heroes? The great comics event of summer 2017 is about to begin courtesy of superstar writers Scott Snyder and James Tynion III and illustrated by a master class of comics artists: Andy Kubert, Jim Lee and John Romita Jr.! You do not want to miss this one! RATED T

What Red Shirt Comics says:

Okay, so some of you may have seen on Twitter or Instagram pictures from Snyders visits here. I am blessed because he comes in with a genuine TWINKLE in his eye drop dead in love with this medium and this craft. He legitimately questions his abilities to write an event, as if Court of Owls was anything less than an epic and one of the very few story arcs that will be remembered from New 52 for a long time to come. Snyder and crew (there are MANY creators on this book) are venturing off into the cosmos to give us a Kirby-esque space adventure like we genuinely haven't seen in a long, long time. This book is loud, powerful, epic, imaginative and FUN. Remember that? When comics could treat characters seriously but still be FUN? Well Rebirth has been finding that and this is the first event since Flashpoint that I am majorly looking forward to. CHECK THIS BOOK OUT.

Marvel Pick of the Week:

Ms Marvel #15

Defenders #1

$4.99

What Previews said:

(W) Brian Michael Bendis (A/CA) David Marquez

Daredevil! Luke Cage! Jessica Jones! Iron Fist! Individually, these four heroes have been on the front lines of the battle to keep the streets of the city safe and secure! But now, with a deadly enemy from the dim past making a major move to unite the underworld, they will need to become more - they will need to become DEFENDERS! Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez unite to bring you the next great super-team, in the tradition of NEW AVENGERS! Rated T+

What Red Shirt Comics says:

Okay, comic purists are probably eye rolling at a Defenders team that's anything less than cosmic. This team has traditionally been headed by none other than Dr. Strange with members like Silver Surfer, Hulk and Ghost Rider. But clearly Marvel would be remiss if they didn't cash in on the success of their Netflix universe and get these street heroes together in a book. But they brought Bendis back to write, the guy who created Jessica Jones and helped redefine Cage. The art is good although the action sequences are given a bit of a brush off to give the characters more time to interact with one another. The device to get them all together is a bit contrived, but totally forgivable because since most really WANT them in a room together. I couldn't help but hear these characters speak with their on-screen actors' voices.

Other Pick of the Week:

Briggs Land: Lone Wolves #1

3.99

What Previews said:

(W) Brian Wood (A) Mack Chater (CA) Matthew Woodson

Isaac Briggs, fresh off a tour in Afghanistan and struggling to reintegrate, finds solace hiking the old forest trails. When two random backpackers wander onto the Land, an innocent situation quickly turns dangerous and Isaac's military training takes a turn down a dark path. Welcome to Briggs Land, nearly a hundred square miles of rural wilderness, representing the largest antigovernment secessionist movement in the United States. o Brian Wood's critically acclaimed series returns for the next chapter in an even more relevant postelection America. o In development for a television series at AMC TV!

What Red Shirt Comics says:

Brian Wood has been killing it with this series and Lone Wolves definitely continues that success. Reminiscent of Red State and The River Wild, this book delves deep into the psyches of nationalist extremists and does it's best to raise tensions while being compelling enough you can't put it down.

Other Pick of the Week:

Invader Zim #20

$3.99

What Previews said:

(W) Jhonen Vasquez (A/CA) Warren Wucinich

If you haven't watched all 385 seasons of FLOOPSY BLOOPS SHMOOPSY yet don't even bother reading this issue! Lotta in-jokes that are just gonna go WAAAAAY over your head. Also, spoilers for the season 4 finale!

What Red Shirt Comics says:

Yeah, you read that right. JHONEN VASQUEZ. I've had probably half a dozen people ask me what he's been working on since Invader Zim and largely he's been a total ghost in this industry. But now he's back in the driver's seat on this issue! And what better way to get back into that satirical flow than to pull a Beavis and Butthead style couch session and lampoon the world through the lens of the idiot box? Classic hijinx ensues.
